Last week our speaker was Lauryn Levesque, a part-time Adams resident and previous postmaster and longtime Rotary member in East Longmeadow. She now spends part of her year on Camiguin Island (a little speck in the South of the Philippines), where she's founded a library with approximately 15,000 books. In conversations with teachers on the island, she's received a large demand for English dictionaries. The economy on the island (where the average wage is $200/month) is centered on fishing, farming, and tourism, and those who learn English fare much better, particularly since Covid has pushed the island's poverty level closer to 70% (from the already high 40% pre-pandemic rate). Lauren asked the club to consider funding dictionaries for the 3rd graders in Mambajao on Camiguin Island, at $3,000. The board will meet on August 11 to consider some options.
