Recent Student Rotarian, attending Miss Hall's School, Sutra Chakma from Bangladesh joined us to explain an effort to help the victims of the Hawaiian wild fires that she is spearheading. The program, a partnership between Miss Hall's and GirlUp is set to deliver relief for the displaced students following the wildfires in Maui. This initiative, called Maui SOS (for "student organized support") is student-led and tied to a key Miss Hall's alum on the ground in Maui. Liz Turcik '08, a teacher and Director of Admissions at Maui Preparatory Academy, has taken in scores of students whose schools burned to the ground. She went national with a call to action to support the mental, physical, and educational health of displaced youth in Maui, and Miss Hall's has answered the call. Helena and other students at Miss Hall's are helping by organizing a clothing drive, establishing a pen pal project to provide social-emotional support to high school-age students in Lahaina, and seeding fundraising activities that will benefit students, families, and teachers who lost their homes and schools. The project fits beautifully with what Rotary celebrates: integrity, service to others, community collaboration. and a greater understanding of the world.
