Well we are off to a new Rotary year with an amended board and a new Prez Erik. Lets wish him good luck, fair winds and calm seas. We also owe our past Prez Tom a giant thank you for a job well done. Here are Tom's closing remarks and handover: This year’s theme was The Magic of Rotary, and it has been a magical year We welcomed terrific new members in Diana, Dave, and Jessica. We had a fantastic auction and recognized an amazing organization in Strong Little Souls. We awarded scholarships to promising students. We hosted a district conference that many in the club helped organize, and that Alex went above and beyond to chair. We recognized John McLaughlin as this year’s Paul Harris honoree. And, we’re sending two students from Pittsfield on Rotary Youth Exchange. All of this is to say nothing about the regular business of Rotary - meetings and speakers; third Thursday gatherings; and casual moments of friendship and fellowship here, and when we run into fellow Rotarians in the community. Finally, I’m especially proud of the times our Club stepped up when it counted: raising funds to support AJ Riello and the Riello family, and everyone’s generosity in making memorial gifts to the Jeff Whitehouse scholarship. It’s all magical! So I’m proud of everything we accomplished - and I know I only get to take credit for it because it happened during my Rotary year. What we all know is this year and this work only happened because all of us played a role. That’s how things get done, be people stepping up and pitching in.That’s how progress gets made everywhere in the world, and especially in Rotary. In a world that feels divided, because it is, we need to seek out and cherish those opportunities for fellowship that rise about politics, partisanship, and pettiness. There are deep and difficult challenges and problems in this world, and they only get better when we put aside the things that divide us and focus on what truly matters: our shared ability and commitment to help those in need through our service. And now this Rotary year has come to an end, and like everyone warned me, it all went so fast and will eventually become just another club memory. I know that’s one of the ways we mark time in Rotary, by remembering who was president when something happened. Please show Erik the same support you showed me and I know there will be great things ahead for our Club. Thank you all for your support and for the privilege of serving as “President Tom” this year. I’m excited now to settle into the most coveted role in Rotary, past president. So now, out with the old and in with the new! |
