Tony Mazzeo
Our speaker on August 11th was Tony Mazzeo, owner of Mazzeo's Ristorante.  Joan introduced Tony and reminded us of his generosity to our club especially hosting our wine pairing which had raised over 25,000 for our foundation over the years.   Tony gave us a brief history of the restaurant which he has been in for 34 years and that his parents founded.   He moved from Winter St to the current location 12 years ago and that has proven to have been a good investment.   He told us that the restaurant business is never easy but that the pandemic really hit them all incredibly hard.  He was able to survive thanks to his dedicated staff and customers when he converted to take-out only.  This included having to order take-out containers from every source he could find and filling his entire dining room with them.
Tony then told us he considered his chefs to be his partners and introduced us to along with his two chefs Lee and Bret.  Bret, who would be considered the chef de cuisine, talked to us about the many handmade items they offer while serving over 2,000 diners a week.  On a Saturday night he has 13 staff members in his kitchen.  Lee, who has been there for 33 years, without a sick day according to Tony, spoke to us about what it’s like to make 350 pounds of fresh pasta a week along with hundreds of gallons of sauce and hundreds of desserts.  Lee also handles the catering aspects of the business.  Tony also let us know we can now get their famous sauce in a jar at the restaurant and at other local retailers.
Operation Pollination Resolution - District Governor Message
Greetings fellow Rotarians,

Last month I joined a number of our neighboring districts in signing the Operation Pollination Resolution pledging to urge our clubs to do more to create pollinator habitat. As you are aware, insects, birds and some animals play a very important role in pollinating the plants that provide us with flowers, fruit and other sources of plant food. The loss of habitat for pollination is decreasing at an alarming rate. I ask clubs and club members to consider creating projects to increase the habitat both at home and in your communities. The environment is one of our seven areas of focus and the pollination effort fits very nicely within that area.

If you would like to learn more about Operation Pollination you can visit https://operationpollination.net/

A copy of the signed resolution is attached to this email.   (See Adrienne if you would like a copy and didn't get the email)

We had a great group of guests this week a with Gail Molari bringing Nick Kirchner, CFO of Molari, Vin Marinaro bringing Stacy Hebb of Nocher Real Estate and Mark Busch bringing his son Jason Busch.

The Rotary International Youth Exchange program is back up and running, so if you have any potential students who you would propose to travel or if you would like to be a host family, please let Alex know.

Joan updated us on Carter LaCasse and we were happy to hear he continues to improve and be cancer free.  She presented the family our check at their home last week and she read a very moving note of appreciation for our generosity from the family.

If anyone wants to suggest a Senior at PHS or Taconic to be a Student of the Month for this coming year, please let Joan DeMartino know as soon as possible.

Reminder! Dirt Wanted: As you may recall, we found there is indeed a leaker at Sparks Tower. Due to thus security concern, access to Sparks Tower is limited to credentialed individuals only, therefore you can't drop by 10th floor (Fines Division) with dirt on your fellow Rotarians. Just because we won't see you at the office doesn't mean we don't want the dirt! Spies of all kinds are encouraged to send dirt, inuendo, vicious packs of truth and all of life's great celebrations to Janet or Jim via email or social media message. While we can't always promise a quid-pro-quo, the Sargant at Arms handbook instructs us to be very kind to those that tattle. Text or message us your dirt!
