PITTSFIELD, Mass. (October 17, 2024) – As the new trash and recycling system is well underway, the City of Pittsfield announces two options for residents to dispose of old trash and recycling containers that are no longer need.
On Saturday, November 9, Casella Waste Systems will host a drop-off at the Pittsfield Transfer Station, located at 500 Hubbard Avenue, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Pittsfield residents can drop off their old trash and recycle containers during this window.
In addition, during the week of November 11 through November 15, old trash and recycling containers will be picked up curbside, on the same day as residents’ scheduled collection. Casella will pick up any old trash and recycling containers, left at the curbside, by a separate truck and not by the trash or recycling truck.
For residents who have backyard pickups, unless you indicate that you are keeping the old container with a note, Casella will pick up your old container(s) the week of November 11.
Before disposing of your old container, the city encourages residents to consider using the old containers for the following options: • Repurpose, sell or donate them. • Use them for storage for yard waste, equipment and other materials. • Use them as a compost bin.
As a reminder, additional resources for the new trash and collection system, including a list of frequently asked questions, can be found on the Toter Program page on the city’s website at www.cityofpittsfield.org.
Dr. Emmanuel Bile was our esteemed guest last week informing the club of the "Choice Mentoring Initiative" - Helping Young Youths in Our Community
Dr. Emmanuel Bile is an adjunct professor of social work at Elms College, Chicopee, Massachusetts. Dr. Bile also serves as a medical social worker/clinical consultant at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, New York, and works with the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services (DDS), Berkshire Area Office in Pittsfield. Dr. Bile has experience in leadership roles at various Human Service Organizations in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. Dr. Bile Co-founded the Choices Mentoring Initiative program to help decrease risk aspects and unearth resiliency to promote the emotional welfare of African American youths ages 10 to 17.
Dr. Bile’s primary interest is fostering learning and collaborating with teams and community partners to provide dignified services and equal opportunity for all the individual protected categories, including age, different abilities, gender identity and sexual orientation, military personnel, national origin or ancestry, race color, or religion. Dr. Bile is a learning facilitator with excellent organizational and leadership skills, proficient in collaborating with others, a team builder, a fast learner, and committed to enhancing the well-being and dignity of all people.
Dr. Bile earned an Associates of Human Services at Berkshire Community College, a Bachelor of Social Work from Elms College, a Master of Social Work from Springfield College, and a Doctor of Social Work from the School of Public Leadership at Capella University. Dr. Bile completed the Commonwealth of Massachusetts CORE Management Program in 2018 and Berkshire Leadership Program in 2017.

Dr. Bile along with Deborah Salmon and Jerome Edgerton came together to discuss the importance of such an organization. Choices Mentoring Initiative seeks to decrease risk aspects and enhance resilience to overall participants' welfare and achievement.

Mission:
The mission of the Choices Mentoring Initiative is to build relationships that connect youth to themselves, their family, and the community with learned skills that increase the feeling of value and inclusion, mutual respect, and self-identity. They work with youth to develop an understanding of themselves through the traversal of knowledge and skills to nurture their self-situation and identity.

Many thanks to Sylvia Zygawski, in her member minute we got a quick update on how things are going in her world. She is a CPA Partner at Adelson and Company along with Carol. She is married to a local ophthalmologist in the area. They share 2 teenage boys, a freshman and a senior, who keep them on their toes between college applications and hockey games and practices. And of course, last but not least, the "daughter she never had" Nexi, their mini aussie who brings the most joy in their lives.

Feed my Sheep: Another success! There were 32 people served. Delicious American goulash with salad, bread, fruit and treats! Thank you to all those who volunteered!

Some big anniversaries as well to collect on and celebrate, congrats to Jeffrey Whitehouse with 46 years of Rotary $ervice! (10.19.78) and Mark Busch trailing right behind him with 33 years (10.24.91). Thank you for all the years gentlemen!
