Stories
During this week's lunch Mr. Hinkley will provide the Club with a sneak preview of the ensemble he's donning for "Walk A Mile" 2015. Mr. Hinkley is humbly optimistic that Club members will feel so honored by the opportunity to have a 'first look' at this year's getup, that they will again be generous in their donations to such a worthy cause. Last year, the Club collectively donated over $400 to the cause, and we can do even better in 2015!
This week's speakers were Joan DiMartino and Dave Hall, who provided an update on the 2016 Club Auction. This year's theme is "The Gift of Rotary," which means the focus will be on what Rotary does in the communities we serve. Ed Hoe will be this year's auctioneer. Auction item donation forms were circulated to club members (these are the forms that members are to use when approaching potential donors/venders). Joan and Dave emphasized the importance of club members securing pledges for donated items earlier than in past years. All auction items are to be pledged no later than December 1. Dave indicated that, although there are a number of factors that influence the overall fundraising success of the auction, the most significant factor is the amount of items we have at the auction. Fewer items means more money is left in the audience. In a typical year roughly 250 attend the auction, but only about 100 people buy at least one item. Dave and Joan believe that more items will mean that more than 100 people will buy an item. Time only permits about 180 items to be auctioned, and Dave said that the goal is to bundle smaller dollar items into packages rather than auctioning them as stand alone items (this will allow for more total items to be auctioned). In closing, the presenters suggested that the club increase the number of "experience" items in the auction, because these items don't have a preset monetary value and have the potential to fetch a much higher price. The goal for this year's auction is to raise $55,000-$65,000 from a collection of items valued at roughly $100,000.
Remember, new month, new venue. We are at the Crowne Plaza for the month of September.
