2017 Butler Award presented to Kelly & Jay Marion
The Donald Butler Award is presented each year to a Rotarian who the president feels has exemplified the Rotarian motto of Service Above Self.  President Joan presented this year's award to Kelly & Jay Marion. Joan gave a heartfelt presentation and explained that the guidance and support given by both of these individuals made it impossible for her to choose only one.  Congratulations to these two dedicated recipients.

Against the Odds
In the October edition of The Rotarian magazine, the cover story focused on the efforts of vaccinators working to eradicate polio in Pakistan. The effort is undertaken with the support of Rotarians in Pakistan, both men and women, in spite of cultural and logistical headwinds. Some Pakistanis live quasi-nomadic lives, making it difficult to make contact and provide vaccines. Given restrictive gender roles in traditional Pakistani culture, oftentimes it falls on women to be the initial points of contact in their communities, building the trust necessary for families to allow their children to be vaccinated. There is sometimes suspicion of their mission and motivations, and the work can be dangerous. As we seek to create positive change in our community, we recognize and applaud our fellow Rotarians working against very tall odds to create positive change in their own.

Earthquake Relief
Last week we were joined by Alma Kruh and Barbara Spiegal, both members of the Simsbury-Granby Rotary Club. They gave a presentation about their time working with the Group Study Exchange Rotary Program doing relief work in earthquake-stricken Nepal in partnership with All Hands Volunteers. In spite of the fact that a year after the earthquake there was still severe infrastructure damage, they were greeted warmly and found both the local people and their fellow volunteers maintained very positive attitudes about the work they were doing. Among the projects that they assisted with, a primary focus was the construction of temporary classrooms so that children could continue their education uninterrupted. They also presented a number of slides and a short video to emphasize the scale of the need, and to give the Club a more vivid picture of their trip. They both said that they had thought about going back, and that anyone who is interested in participating should contact Alma Kruh.

Walk A Mile
On Thursday Mike Hinkley spoke to us about the 6th annual Walk A Mile event to benefit the Elizabeth Freeman Center. The event, in which participants are sponsored to walk a mile in high-heels, raises money and awareness in support of survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence in our county. The event was a success, with many walkers both old and new participating; the fundraising site for the Elizabeth Freeman Center currently indicates that they have surpassed their funding goal. Mike demonstrated his dedication to the cause by attending lunch wearing not just the shoes he would be walking in, but full gladiator attire as well.
